CSA Fall Newsletter: November 7th, 2022 (Week 1/7)
Howdy Folks,
Well it feels like we are starting out on a unique foot with the first week of fall CSA deliveries being on the day of a Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse and a very pivotal election day! Well we know one thing for sure, fall fare is looking good and lots more cooking is on the horizon.
Chris is outside sorting garlic to plant for spring garlic scallions. We plant a whole head in one hole, versus just one clove. The close proximity of the seeds together in their head forces the garlic up with a nice green shoot, creating a being more like a scallion than a clove of garlic. These are a smart crop to plant as they are pretty much a 100% guaranteed success crop. Garlic is so hardy and reliable as well as good for you, so it’s a win win! This will most likely be something you will find in an early spring share.
Carrots are on our mind. The harvest crew has been spending the majority of their days this past week harvesting carrots. We use a tool mounted on the back of the tractor called an undercutter that is basically like a u shaped knife that pulls up a 30” section of soil loosening the carrots. Then they are pulled from the earth by hand, tops are twisted off and they are placed in a ton tote. These carrots then sit in this tote dirty until they are destined for a CSA box or a farmers market. They stay nice and crispy in their dirt layer. Our goal is to harvest 750 bed ft before Friday. This would make it so all of the carrots are out of the ground before we get a predicted 2” of rain on Friday.
Heads up to all you Thursday Fall Deliveries, the week of Thanksgiving… We will be delivering your shares on Wednesday the 23rd, so none of us have to do any veggie schlepping on Thanksgiving day, just veggie eating! We are planning a quick trip east to visit Chris’ family. We are super excited about this as we have not been back east since before Covid.
Your Farmers,
Chris, Aeros and The Who Crew
