Summer CSA Newsletter: September 3rd, 2024 (Week 15)

Chris is off with a full spreader to seed cover crops. Some of our first plantings of summer are being put to rest for the season with a final planting of cover crops. Here we have a mix of peas and wheat. These cover crops help to protect and rebuild the soil nutrients after a season of growing!

Hi Folks,

Week XV.

The transition to fall is making itself known with the cooler nights.  We are lucky we still have basil around.  Chris and crew have spent this week mowing down plants from previous summer crop successions and then tilling this residue under in order to prepare beds for the last seeding of the season with a cover crop.

We met with Matthew Hansen from PASA, Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture this week to go over some things about how we plan to use our funds we are being awarded by the Climate Smart Farming Grant.  This is a $45,000 cap award that most farmers should easily be able to cap over the course of 4 years.  We know many other farmers that are taking advantage of this grant. The funds can be used for sustainable practices that you already do and also to implement others that you would like to begin.  It’s exciting to see funding! We, the organic diversified vegetable sector of agriculture, don't see federal funds very often.  Thanks to PASA these funds are available to us in a trickle down from the USDA $1.5 Billion Available to help farmers advance Conservation and Climate Smart Agriculture, via Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act.

Pretty cool to get some financial support to keep doing what we are doing and encouraging us to keep it up.  The cost of cover crop seed and seeds of all sorts go up each year, so this will be a wonderful help.
