CSA Summer Newsletter: August 7th, 2023 (Week 11/23)

Hi Folks,

The weather has been cooperating very nicely these last few weeks.  It’s been wild to watch the radar and see pretty nasty storms rip through our area yet miss us.  Several times we have been within 7 miles of some very strong winds, rains, thunder and lightning.  This is typical of Western PA summer and especially in our area with a lot of rivers and steep hills, it seems like the storms will ride a ridge and keep on going.

It looks like we are saying goodbye to Cucumbers as we usually do this time of year.  You are getting the very last of them today!  They are very susceptible to disease and there is not any OMRI certified spray that we can use being organic that can ward off disease at this part of the season.  We hope you enjoyed them while they lasted.  Sometimes it feels like it’s almost too much of some veggies, but then there time is also then over for the season.  They are done!  Then if you eat seasonally there is no more until next year, and the wait begins.  Unless you have done some sort of preservation, either freezing, drying, fermenting, canning...  This is how we extend the seasons here in our house.  Pickles are downstairs in the cellar fermenting not much longer before they sit in the fridge until we eat them all.  Same goes for Kraut!

So if you are feeling overwhelmed with tomatoes, you can freeze them whole and pop them into chili in the winter, or cook them down into a salsa or spaghetti sauce!

Get excited about the first melons!  They are sweet and juicy and emanate the essence of late summer!
