CSA Summer Newsletter: July 24th, 2023 (Week 9/23)

Hi Folks,

It’s a hustle and bustle around the farm in July.  We already have the garlic harvested and hanging from the walls and rafters of the tractor shed.  We are about to undertake a huge harvest of onions.  It’s seeming like it might be our biggest onion harvest yet.  Chris and Andres are clearing out the garage that we never park our cars in, it’s mostly a supplyhouse.  They are designing a new onion drying area to cure and store the onions.  They are thinking it might be two rows 40’ long of 3 x 48” bins high!

The coons and the crows are seeking out the watermelons!  The crows have been hovering for over a month and half alongside the field but now that the fruits have more water they are beginning to peck at the fruit.  Maybe this is what brings in the coons, possibly they smell the fruits oozing their sweet aroma from the crow pecked holes.  Every year we get crow and raccoon pressure on the melons, and Chris always makes it sounds like it’s going to be a complete crop loss, but Chris would never let this happen to us!  He himself loves melons way too much to not get a harvest.  We overplant, like we do with most crops, so we have more than enough.  We always have to hedge our bets, so that everyone gets a piece of the pie, including the crows and the raccoons.

Your Farmers,

Chris, Aeros, and The Who Crew
