Spring 2026 Week 4 Newsletter

Howdy folks,

It looks like the old saying April showers bring May flowers is bleeding a little but into May!  We are hoping that last night was the last of the super dips.  We saw 30 degrees last night and we hope to not see this again until late November early December!  We never know what to expect these days but it's the observations that make us aware of change and we can act to adapt.

Change and awareness!  Well Chris took a deep dive into fermentation and soil science this winter.  He's been brewing microbes for the soil.  He started with our own homebrew of Kvass as a mother and just continued in making even bigger vats than our 10 gallon crock.  260 gallons per batch now.  He is checking them out under the microscope.  We are looking for lactobacillus.  As the lactobacillus feeds the good fungus in the soil!  It's been a fun family affair.  We've hooked up the scope to the computer so we can all watch and we don't have to wait in line to see all the action.  So we are also growing lactobacillus, yes this is the same bacteria that you find in yogurt, sauerkraut, etc... the soil and plants also like it.  It is super helpful to plants to assimilate nutrients and enhance growth!  The presence of lactobacillus brings the presence of lactic acid and this also alters pH.  So this is also a way for us to alter the pH of the soil here on the farm with out having to buy in any inputs.  We simply apply this brew that help with local flora as well as pH. There is lots of learning to do here.  Luckily Chris does have a biology background, so he’s one step ahead, jumping in with both feet and then running.

Note: If you ever want more food in your box, You can add on to your order! Simply click on this link for a tutorial on how to add items to your order.  We now have a new tab on our website, “Help” It is located in the top banner on the far right.  This is where you can find all sorts of tutorials on how to maneuver around the WCFY website.

Your Farmers,

Chris, Aeros and the Who Crew

These are our big 260 gallon vats of ferments!  Here on the loading dock is also a 260 gal vat of Certified organic molasses.  Molasses is an ingredient in this brew!  Yum!  It smells devine, on the way other end of the spectrum of amendment aromas from fish fertilizer!  The final brew gets foliar fed; sprayed onto plants. It also get put into the irrigation drip line when watering.

These beautiful weeds, mustard and dandelion were added to the brew.  They are growing in our fields, so we want to add them so that we can give the soil the nutrients that they hold. It is thought that weeds grow in a location because they have the ability to exude nutrients that the soil needs to be more balanced.
