CSA Summer Newsletter: July 10th, 2023 (Week 7/23)

Howdy Folks,

We harvested the first beds of potatoes yesterday.  This harvest was a little later than the usual first week of July due to the dry spell, these taters just needed some more time in the ground to feed their babes.  When we had the hot and dry spell they were in flower and this is the ideal time for them to have a lot of water, so they just needed a little more time to make up for the lack of growth earlier.  You will be starting to get potatoes next week.  But for now we have to bust through this amazing spring beet harvest.  We are still working our way through our first planting of very happy beets!  It’s always amazing how some plants make the best of the weather.

We have hired new help!  They both start next week.  Hunter will be our new driver.  Natalie will be our new office assistant!  Wow, it’s going to be the good times rolling around here soon!  Their help is very much appreciated and needed to lighten the load.

The main season on the farm is a busy one, lively and full of life.  Weeds poking up out of any freshly scratched dirt.  Lots of wildlife!  This season so far in the valley one of us has spotted too many deer, groundhogs and rabbits, but also the select coyote, ferret, & bobcat.  We haven’t seen any bears this season yet, but we usually do.  Eagles fly overhead every day on the farm.  The farm is nestled in the river valley called Eddyville, the Mahoning creek runs a horseshoe curve around the farm.  It’s a magical place!  We can’t wait to have you all out this summer!  We have a goal set in stone in these coming weeks after our new help arrives to set up a couple of events this summer, so that you all can come out and enjoy the farm, to see where your food is coming from, meet your farmers and chillax in the countryside… so be on the lookout for some info in the coming weeks.
