CSA Spring Newsletter: May 23rd, 2022 (Week 4)
Hello friends!
With beautiful weather like this, everything alive is movin’ and shakin’. In a month and a half, the world here in PA goes from chilly and lifeless to absolutely gorgeous and alive!
We’re really enjoying the beautiful weather and so, too, are all the vegetables we have planted. After a week of sun and some heat, we got a little rain to cool it all off. The comfy satisfying look on the face of those vegetables will be hard to forget. With sustained temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s and warm at night, the vegetables are growing very well.
We’ve tilled many acres and, in the process, have incorporated many tons of green manure (grasses and legumes) to wake up the soil life. It’s basically an all you can eat buffet and in just a few weeks, all that material will be unrecognizable. It’ll mostly appear to be dirt. It’ll just be a little loftier, a little richer. All the better to encourage an ecosystem which gives you happy vegetables.
Although there is a modest chance of frost tonight, we’re going full bore to protect all of our warmth loving tropical plants (I almost wrote warmth loving tropical FARMER). We take no risks with frosts having seen just how devastating and surprising a frost can be.
This evening we’ll be covering tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, melons, watermelon and winter squash. You might say, “See! You shouldn’t have planted so early Chris!” and I would respond, “ All we have to do is tuck in all the sensitive veggies under some sheets when it’s time to go nite nite. They’ll be fine…I hope.”
We hope you’ve been enjoying the spring shares. We’re very encouraged by our experience thus far and it has pushed us to think of interesting veggies to grow in addition to the current selection.
Enjoy the weather.
Your Farmers,
Chris and Aeros
