CSA Summer Newsletter: October 31st, 2020 (Week 23/23)
Happy Halloween!
The really weird thing about vegetable farming is that we have to earn a years income in 5 months. In those 5 months we make money. There’s lots of pre and post work from those 5 months. There is some season extension we do with the Spring and Fall CSA shares, which helps us out and reduces summer stress a little bit.
In our busy months of July, August, and September, if there are problems, it is almost impossible to find time to correct course. Mostly, we’re talking about transplanting and all the steps taken to get healthy plants out to the field to handle all the stresses mother nature creates. Weeding at the appropriate times so we don’t see a weedy field but rather fields of lettuces and carrots. At the time, all I can do is write down some notes that I will review at the end of the season and incorporate to make the following year better and better.
So is next year going to be better?! Oh! Do we have plans!
Although it is very exciting to think about the following year and how much more watermelon and cantaloupes we’re going to grow (!!!!), we still have a fair bit of eating to do yet this year.
This is the last pitch for anyone that wants to sign up for the Fall CSA. Remember if you are going away for a portion of the fall season you can make a vacation. We will also be accepting members further into the fall, so if you miss your weekly box, please don’t hesitate to sign up and get a prorated price. Although we’ll be offering lots of roots to eat, we’ll be offering lots of fresh greens to eat, as well.
Finally, everyone from Who Cooks For You Farm thanks you for your interest in our food. As much as vegetables are a big part of what we do here, all of you subscribers to our CSA help complete the circle. Might seem like a little thing on your end from your vantage point, but to our employees and their families and to Aeros and myself, it is not. Your partnership is greatly appreciated! Your participation helps us all live a little better. At the end of the day, isn’t that what it’s all about?
So, A Huge Thank You from all of us!
We will be in touch with farm/produce updates and opportunities like 2023 Spring & Summer CSA registration. Also keep your eyes peeled for a survey. We want all of your opinions. This will help us get better at what we do. We aim to please, and your feedback is very welcomed and encouraged.
FYI - We threw in an extra pint of tomatillos as the final summer flare. To make a very simple salsa mexicana, cut the tomatillos in quarters and put in a small sauce pan with a little water. Add 1 onion, 1 head of garlic, hot peppers if you like of which we usually add 3 jalapenos, and an herb of your choice, dill, parsley, cilantro or basil. Add salt to taste. Cook down on low heat until the tomatillos soften and then blend with an immersion blender to a nice sauce consistency. This lasts quite a while in the fridge. We refuse to live without these simple delicious salsas. You can substitute tomatoes for tomatillos for this effortlessly delicious fresh salsa.
