CSA Summer Newsletter: September 5th, 2022 (Week 15/23)

Howdy Folks,

It’s been a nice summer.  Of course we’re still in summer according to the calendar and the weather is still decent, but the silence of birds on the landscape is always the first sign that the seismic shift to fall and winter is underway.

Just a small note on birds…there are many tropical species like warblers that spend the summer with us in Pennsylvania.  Many of them have started their migrations south.  Including the swallows, one of my favorite birds, have been banding together getting ready for the long trip south.  Just a week ago we saw the longest trail of redwing blackbirds, grackles and some other birds that I have ever seen in my life.

Farm wise, we’re starting the transition into more fall produce.  Not at this exact moment, but we will see more fall fare soon.  Please enjoy some of the final boxes of summer produce.  It’ll be time to make soup and crank the oven before we know it!

In terms of working, it’s like clock work in that we all start to feel like moving on from harvesting summer stuff.  It’s an ebb and flow, the seasonality, that really makes me love what we do.  We’re all ready to start harvesting fall vegetables and walk away from the summer veggies.

There is a parallel, too, to eating.  As summer comes to an end and  we’re like, “I’m not sure how much more of this I can eat”, we move on to an entirely different eating experience.   I always keep this in context which allows me to keep the transition a positive thing.  At the end of summer, I WANT to feel tired of the summer veggies.  I want to feel like moving on.

So, If you’re feeling like moving on from some summer vegetables, just know that this is a sentiment you’re sharing with some of us.  I always try to change the perception to be understood as a completed job.  Success!!!  Satiation has been achieved.  Rather than something like, “I can’t take this” or “This is just too much”.

The seasons to me are a great part of what sustains and maintains the farm, the people that work here and our needs and desires of our customers.

I will be grateful for the last couple weeks of cherry tomatoes, fairy tale eggplant and maybe watermelons…But I am ready for some delicious stew, too.
